Urban Orchard | Huerta Ubana

This post is about the ongoing work in my urban garden. I started this project with the goal of growing my own fresh, organic produce while making the most of the limited space available in the city. Little by little, I have been improving the garden, experimenting with different plants, and learning from both successes and mistakes.

One of the main tasks has been soil preparation. I’ve been working on enriching it with compost and organic matter to ensure my plants get the nutrients they need. Composting has become an essential part of my routine, as it helps reduce waste while improving soil health. I’ve also installed compost bins to make the process more efficient.

Another key aspect of my work is plant selection and rotation. I grow a mix of vegetables, herbs, and flowers, taking into account seasonality and companion planting to maximize yield and minimize pests naturally. So far, I’ve had success with tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, and aromatic herbs like basil and oregano.

Pest control is always a challenge, so I’ve been trying eco-friendly solutions such as neem oil and homemade garlic sprays. I also encourage beneficial insects like ladybugs to keep unwanted pests in check.

Additionally, I’ve set up an irrigation system to optimize water use, especially during hot days. Drip irrigation has helped me maintain consistent moisture levels without wasting water.

My urban garden is an ongoing learning experience, and I love seeing how each small effort leads to growth and improvement. I’ll keep sharing updates on new techniques, challenges, and harvests as the project evolves. If you have any gardening tips or suggestions, I’d love to hear them!
